Bernese-Mountain-Dog-Poodle-MixThe Bernedoodle (or Bernie Doodle) is a cross breed formed with contributions from the Poodle and Bernese Mountain Dog. This breed blends the cleverness of the poodle with the easy-going loyalty of the Bernese. It’s also a dog that is either low shedding or non-shedding, so is safe for most people who have allergies. When it comes to the perfect companion dogs, they are among the best ones to get. Although most can look stunning, they are definitely not bred for this alone. I’m saying this because they are meant to be by your side no matter what you’re doing. Be it that you are snow walking , hiking or even just lying on your couch, they could be the best friend you’re looking for.

Bernedoodles are not identical to each other. The genes coming from its parent breeds meld in a unique way and it can be fascinating to see what each of the litter produces. With that being said, prospective owners should understand that there could be different Bernedoodles in the hybrid litter, and so, choosing the right breeder can help you match with the best dog for your situation and preferences.

On the other hand, this kind of breed can have the best attributes that are found in both of its parents. They can be friendly, fun, goofy, playful and sociable, not only to its owners but with other animals as well. They could be the perfect dogs for your family, not to mention that they are gentle around kids and elders. As a matter of fact, they could make an excellent therapy dog, not to mention that they can be trained easily, they are intelligent and love working.

However, before you own one, make sure that you’re a responsible owner and you have time and effort to teach this dog what is the right thing to do and what is wrong. Since they are intelligent and plainly sociable, it will make both of the owners as well as the dog happy, if the pet is trained.

Are The Bernie Doodle Dogs Hypoallergenic?

There are people who have lots of allergies and they might have reactions when it comes to encountering allergens, especially those coming from dogs. However, as a prospective owner, you should know that a hybrid dog like the Bernie Doodle can have different types of coat. The curlier its coat, the lesser it will shed.

Straight Coat – Just like their parents with a Bernese coat, it could have a slight wave to it. Such coat will shed, much lesser than the Bernese, but it’s still quite noticeable.

Wavy Coat – most of the Bernedoodles have such coat type, giving you the typical doodle look. These coats are the types that doesn’t really shed that much. Those who have allergies to dogs won’t be having any reaction to wavy coated dogs.

Curly Coat – such coat is like what Poodles have and it will not shed. Though this is not 100% certain, if you’re good with poodles, then the curly-coated Bernedoodle should not bother you at all.

On the other hand, if you have more allergies, like the one to dog saliva, the Bernedoodle is not for you.

The breeders can be the ones to tell you if you do have allergies to their puppies and they will probably allow you to return the pup if there’s a problem (better check with them first though). For grooming purposes, maintaining a curly-coated Bernedoodle or any other dog will take some of your time, money and effort if you want to maintain its cleanliness. Most of the Bernedoodles do not really shed, or they shed very little. You probably have to brush them to prevent matting and this should be done regularly. Clipping them every 3-4 months is also necessary.

Height and Weight

Depending on the size of their parents, Bernedoodles come in different sizes as well. A standard Poodle crossed with a Bernese is about 50 lbs and 21 inches at the shoulder, albeit females are smaller than the males. A miniature poodle crossed with a Bernese is about 15-20 inches at the shoulder and 25-49 lbs, females being smaller. For a Toy Poodle crossed with Mini Bernedoodle, the weight would be 10-24 lbs and 10-14 inches at its shoulder.

Colors of Bernedoodles

Mostly, Bernedoodles come in the black color, but there are also the ones with black and white coating, there are some black, brown or tricolor, which is a mix of white, black and brown.

Bernedoodle Generations

Bernedoodle_dog-Bernese-PoodleF1 – it is the cross of this dog’s two breeds at the first generation. The pup is 50% Bernese Mountain Dog and 50% percent Poodle. This cross generation is considered to be the healthiest one, as parents do not really contribute genes for the common diseases that the pup could inherit.

F1B – it’s a backcross with a Poodle and Bernedoodle. The puppy will be 75% Poodle and 25% Bernese. Such puppies of this generation are allergy-friendly and less likely to shed. Some of the breeders have already backcrossed a Bernese with the Bernedoodle, resulting a pup with more traits from the Bernese.

F2 – it’s the second cross generation. It’s where the F1 Bernedoodle is being crossed with another F1 Bernedoodle. If it has been done for 7 successful generations, the breeder could apply to register the dog as a purebred. If there’s a closer generation coming together, then they will be in the line. However, the genetic problems of the purebreds are likely to reappear and the hybrid vigor diminishes. Some of the F2 pups could also have an unsuitable coat. It will not be the same fleece softness that you usually love in the doodles.

The purebred dogs have their own breed standard and certain appearance and every dog has to conform to it. The mixed breeds do not really have their own breed standard, but if it is from a qualified breeder, then they could provide you an idea of what the pup would look like as an adult, as they will base it on what the parents have produced from years of breeding.

Health Concerns

While the Bernedoodles are healthier than their parent breeds, they could still be prone to a number of conditions such as eye problems and elbow or hip dysplasia. Skin problems like allergies and hot spots are also seen in this crossbreed. They could also have cancer, just like other dogs.

An early genetic testing could easily reduce the risk of many diseases. A reputable breeder will perform a number of tests, providing evidence of successful results. It is always of the essence for buyers to understand that breeders invest in a good deal of money upfront in order to find healthy breeding stock and for doing the necessary testing as well. Usually, such investment is reflected in the higher cost of the pup for the buyer.

Life Span of Bernedoodles

The standard Bernedoodles will live for about 12-15 years, but the Mini Bernedoodles can reach 13-17 years and the Tiny Bernedoodles between 14-18 years. Keep in mind that the smaller dogs usually live a longer life.

Male and Female Temperament

Male and female Bernie Doodles have different temperaments. Usually, females are smaller, but a lot more independent and can be trained easily. Unlike the males that are bigger, but goofy and stubborn.

Temperament differences between standard and mini Bernedoodle

When it comes to temperament, the mini Bernedoodles have a higher energy level than the standard ones. Both types of Bernedoodles love playing, so there’s no need for you to worry if you have kids at home, as they can play together. This mix breed can also hike, fetch and swim. If you’re a couch buddy, they will definitely join you.

Exercise Requirement

Since Bernedoodles are classified as energetic dogs, they will appreciate a regular daily exercise. Walking, playing or running in the parks would benefit their health. 30 minutes of doing these exercises will be enough for the day. If you’re the athletic kind of owner, then they could be a good companion for your training or workouts.

Grooming Bernedoodles

When it comes to grooming, a Bernedoodle with curlier coat needs time and effort to be maintained. Since they are the type that do not really shed that much, brushing them in a regular manner is essential. As mentioned above, you should clip their hair regularly to avoid matting. Taking them to professionals for proper grooming is essential every 6-8 weeks. Since they are professionals, they know how to take care of your dog and provide them the proper treatment they need. However, you need to make sure that your pup has the full set of three vaccines. In order to get them used to the process, you should tell the groomer to give them a bath, clean their ears and cut their nails. Full clip could scare the pup, so you need to do it gradually. There’s no need for you to take a lot of time bathing your Bernedoodle, as it should be done every 3-4 months, in order to maintain the healthy essential oils in their fur.
