Dog breeds are as varied as the owners of these animals and their needs. While some look for companionship and for dogs that will fit in a purse or be comfortable living in a small apartment, others want a large dog to protect them or a dog that has a keen sense of smell, capable of helping out during hunting or police operations. Dogs have been bred for thousands of years and new breeds and hybrids continue to appear on a regular basis.

There are a few different main types of dogs, though they are not the only ones. Most dog breeds are classified as working dogs, herding dogs, hunting dogs, guard dogs or companion dogs.

Check out our list of breeds below to learn more about each one and find out which one has the type of aggressiveness, size and care needs that would make it a good fit for you.
